More About The Artist
It was 2008 and freelance journalist Lenny Bango was in Los Angeles on tour for Camden House, which had published his first book, Rocked & Rolled: A Strange and Twisted Saga, a brutal and eloquent account of the year he spent touring with a notorious American rock band, then a symbol of everything that made Middle America nervous. Overnight Bango had become a literary enfant terrible, his book climbing onto best-seller lists. After appearing on NBC's Tomorrow Show with host Huge Downer, the chain-smoking Bongo had a singular request of his publicist, Silvia Slight. "I insisted that we take a break from the grueling schedule for a few minutes," Bango recalled. "I was desperate to hear the just-released Tattooed Millionaires' album."
Together they found a record store on Melrose Avenue that carried Armed and Hammered, a scorching soundtrack from the sleaze and blood-drenched streets of the Los Angeles theater district, where Bango had written Rocked & Rolled and befriended the street-rock band. While writing the book, he would often zoom through Hollywood on his Triumph Tiger motorcycle, park in front of Suite C, and listen to the Millionaire's lead vocalist Johnny Jetson, belt out rock classics like "Show Some Respect". It was Bango, in fact, who had introduced The Los Angeles Herald's music critic, R.U. Ferrell, to the Tattooed Millionaires, insisting that they were as good as, if not better than, any L.A. band. Now, with Slight at his side, Bango went to the store listening kiosk and inserted the disc.
"Upon hearing the first note I smiled," Bango recalled. "This was the triumph of the Los Angeles people. We were all making it, riding the magical wave that we never believe will break." Bango kept hitting the track selector button, anxious to hear a sampling of each cut. When he got to the fourth song- "Laid in the U.S.A."-he could no longer control his enthusiasm: " Hot Damn, Silvia,' I remember saying, 'You've been asking me pesky questions about what I think. Listen to this. Wow! I could have written these lyrics myself. Today is my time.' "
Today is your time too.
